Why did this P-51 Mustang land on a WWII US Navy aircraft carrier? Nearly 15,000 of the outstanding U.S. land-based WWII fighter planes were produced during World War II. During that time the US Navy began experimenting whether the P51 Mustang could operate as a carrier-based long-distance escort fighter.
