Here is a video guide explaining how to dodge a blue shell with a mushroom. Blue shells (or spiny shells if you want to be specific) are the bane of any first place racer’s existence. Now, with the help of your handy mushroom, you can maintain your lead and show off to all of your friends!
This technique is able to be used in both Mario Kart 8 AND the Nintendo Switch exclusive Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It is slightly easier in MK8D purely because of the ability to hold two items at once which makes preserving the mushroom all the easier.
The main complication is that you cannot get a mushroom while in first place. You need to get one from a lower place, make it into first, and then save it for the blue shell. Once you have a blue shell incoming, you can dodge it if you use the mushroom right when the blue shell begins its downward trajectory. You only have a few frames to hit this properly or you'll just get crushed anyways.
