On today’s podcast, Caty Weaver and Mario Ritter, Jr. host the show. Caty tells listeners what they are going to hear. First, Caty reports on efforts to protect the world’s largest land animals. They are very intelligent and highly social. A recent study also says that the number of African elephants sharply decreased over about 50 years. Activists blame illegal killing, or poaching, of elephants. Activists say poaching for elephants tusks remains a problem because of demand in China. Since pistachios require little water, farmers have been using more land for the crops in California. And, in the past ten years, the United States has gone beyond Iran to become the world’s top exporter of the nut. Pistachios might become even more popular in California as it faces limited water supplies. The Australian government recently announced plans to ban the use of social media by children under the age of 16. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “Social media is doing harm to our kids.” He added that now is the time for the government to intervene. The country’s Parliament will introduce a new bill during the final two weeks of its meeting starting on November 18. The bill will set an age limit of 16 for children to use social media and make the services responsible for enforcement. Today’s lesson is on Lesson 3 of Level II of Let’s Learn English. Jill and Andrew explains how to connect two past events in English using the past perfect tense. This results in an unusual construction “had had” when the main verb is “have.” The two explain this construction and others involving the past perfect in great detail. They use the dialogue between Anna and Pete in the funny episode from Let’s Learn English Level II in which the co-workers tell why they were late for work. Then, Jill and Andrew ask listeners to tell write us about their experiences working with someone who is different from them.
