Looking to install a permanent telescope mount in your garden? In this video, I show how I built a solid DIY pier and custom aluminium adapter plate for my Sky-Watcher NEQ6 mount. I wanted to avoid the typical “rat’s nest” of threaded rods, so I designed something more solid and secure.
🛠️ In this build:
10mm steel top and bottom plates
200mm diameter, 9mm wall pipe (not easy to source!)
Cast concrete foundation (500mm deep) with M12 stainless threaded rods
Custom machined aluminium adapter replicating the NEQ6 tripod mount
Pier azimuth adjustment built into the lower plate
Honest thoughts on improvements (and what I’d do differently next time)
I’m by no means an expert on pier builds, but this was a great project and I’ve been happy with how stable the setup is so far. If you spot any flaws or have tips from your own build, I’d really appreciate the feedback in the comments!
