In this episode of ReelTalk, Ben interviews the women behind the lead characters of Glinda, played by Grammy winning musical actress Ariana Grande and Elphaba, played by Tony award-winner Cynthia Erivo. In it, they talk about the enormous pressure of honoring the 21-year-old cult classic theatre production, while putting their own stamp on their characters. They also reveal to Ben what it was like working on the megamovie production and flying over the magical world of Oz, complete with its own massive model of Jeff Goldblum’s head. Goldblum, who also spoke to Ben, plays the iconic Wizard, alongside other stars, Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and Grande’s real-life boyfriend, Ethan Slater (These Untold Secrets). The original Glinda and Elphaba of the Wicked musical theatre production, Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel also have a supporting role.
Wicked is the origin story of the witches from The Wizard of Oz. It follows the green skinned Elphaba, a misunderstood outcast, making friends with the popular, sparkly pink-wearing Glinda as they study together at university.
The movie is currently showing in Australian cinemas.
