In this Deconstructed video, we’ll trace the incredible journey of the Bathyscaphe Trieste — the first vessel to reach the ocean’s deepest known point. Join us as we follow the Trieste, piloted by oceanographer Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh, on their historic 1960 descent into the Challenger Deep. To understand how submersibles work in the hostile abyssal zone, we'll deconstruct the engineering of the Trieste that allowed it to withstand the crushing pressure. You'll see how it used a massive gasoline-filled float for buoyancy and a thick steel pressure sphere for the crew capsule, allowing it to descend to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. This design, based on the principle of a free balloon, enabled controlled descent and ascent through the use of electromagnet-released iron ballast. The success of this landmark expedition proved that humans could reach the deepest point on Earth, forever changing the history of deep-sea exploration and inspiring the next generation of explorers.
